The author writes a beautiful narrative, but I thought the story moved at a snail's pace and was depressing. Although a fictional novel, I felt that the author based many aspects of the story on events which were indeed common to the Civil War. If so, I have additional insight into the cruelty of the Union soldiers and the suffering endured by southern families, and by their women and children in particular. Those are take-always which I shall remember.
Very good read. Civil War from a unique perspective.
