This captivating story, with it’s lyrical prose and detailed description of the wild and living marshland, will make your world disappear.
Absolutely great story and writing. Easy to understand how this book was number 1 on the NYT best seller list. Highly recommend.
I really liked how well written this was AND the topic of a girl overcoming such a unique & unimaginable situation. This is a page turner folks, you will enjoy the story & how it unfolds.
I’m not a huge fan of “coming of age” stories, but this was really beautiful. I cared deeply for the complex, multi-layered characters, and the love story was really sweet. The setting was so beautifully detailed, I swear you could smell the salty marshes of NC!
This book is a poetic marvel. Just as Kya is the Marsh, so we become immersed in Ms Owen's dense, rich descriptions of the lowlands of North Carolina, the marsh waters and the life that lives in it.
Her characters could almost be slightly overdrawn except they become richly familiar and expanded in detail and you know them. And even though I knew where the story was going early on, it did not take anything away from breathing in every word, seeing the beautiful treasures of Kya's collections, feeling her abandonment, and our relish of the final chapter where Ms Owens does not disappoint.
I wait for her second novel, and will surely read passages of this one again until then.
Why isn’t this book number one on The NY Times best seller list? Beautifully written without “over writing” and hauntingly descriptive. Read this, you won’t be sorry!
This is by far, one of the best books I’ve ever read. The murder mystery seems secondary (in the best way) to this coming of age story, featuring a strong female at its center, and written with such detail and beautiful prose. Kya is different, but yet is all of us, and her story holds so many lessons about what it means to be human - and a woman. This book will stay with me forever.
A wonderful story of friendship, adventure, love, and hurt.
Could not put this book down.
It's been a while since I have enjoyed a book this much. I didn't want to put it down yet t the same time, didn't want to finish it because then Kya's story would be over.
This novel was absolutely beautiful. That's all that needs to be said.
Great read & a true page-turner. I could feel my heart beat louder with each chapter. A love story without all the sap along side a murder trial that takes you to the very last page!
